Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Guide to OWL Products

OWL Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

We frequently get asked if the OWL Reset is appropriate to do while pregnant or breastfeeding. It’s important to remember that during this time there are many changes happening and it’s most important to listen to your body and give it what it needs. We don’t recommend consuming only liquids during the pregnancy or postpartum period. Your bodies’ need for calories and nutrition increases during this time and it’s important to meet that need. The OWL Reset can be used alongside a clean diet, if you and your healthcare provider decide it is appropriate for you during this time. To help guide your decision of whether or not to start a reset while pregnant or breastfeeding we’ve broken down some of the key ingredients in the Reset.

BONE BROTH

There’s little debate that bone broth is a nutritional powerhouse ideal for both pregnancy and postpartum. Bone broth is packed with easy to absorb vitamins, minerals and amino acids that are beneficial for building a strong and healthy body (and baby!). While bone broth is recommended throughout the entire pregnancy it can be especially helpful during the first trimester if you are experiencing nausea and morning sickness. Bone broth is also recommended as a way to rebuild the body’s nutrient stores after labor.

BENTONITE CLAY

Bentonite clay is found in our Magic Matcha Mylkshake. Bentonite clay has a high concentration of minerals and also helps absorb and remove heavy metals and toxins from the body. Bentonite clay can be used to help with digestive upset and nausea and some women have reported that it’s helpful to ward off morning sickness and acid reflux.

SPIRULINA

Spirulina is a type of blue green algae that is also found in our Magic Matcha Mylkshake. Spirulina is known as one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet. We chose it for our shake because of its ability to help the body detox heavy metals. Spirulina is a very easy to absorb source of protein and phyto-nutrients, making it loved by many during pregnancy. There is even some research which shows evidence that spirulina during pregnancy may be helpful in preventing pre-eclampsia. We couldn’t find any reason not to take spirulina, but as with any changes in your diet, it’s best to check with your doctor first.

SLIPPERY ELM

Slippery Elm is a demulcent herb that is found in our Golden Ginger Mylkshake. We’ve included this herb in the shake because it has the potential to coat the lining of your digestive tract reducing symptoms of inflammation and IBS. It’s demulcent qualities also help with bowel regularity and acid reflux. The jury is out on whether or not slippery elm is safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. There are some who believe that slippery elm can cause miscarriages when used topically or internally, but this hasn’t been adequately studied. To stay on the safe side you can always request that we make your Golden Ginger without this herb.

TRIPHALA

Triphala is a blend of 3 digestive fruits widely used in Ayurvedic medicine. It is used for tonifying the colon and increasing bowel regularity. Triphala has wide ranging health effects and is generally considered safe for many, children to elderly. That being said, according to Ayurvedic theory Triphala stimulates peristalsis and downward flow, which is great for constipation but not great for pregnancy. According to Ayurvedic theory triphala is also dextoxifying, which is contraindicated while breastfeeding because of the risk that the dislodged toxins exit the body through the breastmilk. We know that many readers may have been taking triphala prior to getting pregnant, so this is another case where you’ll want to discuss with your doctor whether continuing to take triphala is the right decision for you. As with any of our Mylkshakes, you can request that we make the bold beet without triphala for you.
