What the Heck is Oil Cleansing?

OWL Venice Skincare Oil Cleansing

When I was 25 I started getting adult onset acne. I went off birth control and Adderall, and my skin was not happy. After making it through high school and college without more than the occasional pimple, I could not believe how much it affected me emotionally. My confidence was at an all time low and I lost all desire to go out in public. Desperate, I tried about every natural skin product on the market and nothing worked.

I started doing some research and stumbled upon Chinese Face mapping, which is based in Chinese Medicine. Chinese Medicine explores the inner connectedness of the body and examines the root causes of symptoms, rather than treating the symptoms like in Western medicine. Chinese Face Mapping explains how different areas of the face are connected to different organs in the body, so they examine these breakouts as indication of underlying issues. According to Chinese Face Mapping, the cystic acne around my jawline, was symptomatic of a hormonal imbalance, which made sense considering I went off the birth control I’d been on for nearly a decade.

I continued my research and I stumbled upon oil cleansing, which is popular in Ayurveda, an ancient Indian healing system. I figured it was worth a shot, while I impatiently waited for my hormones to balance back out. I did some research on different oils that are safe for the face, and started out with a blend of coconut oil and baking soda. My acne cleared up significantly, but after some time, I found the baking soda too harsh, and the coconut oil too comedogenic for my skin type. I played around with a ton of other oils, and tested different blends until I ultimately landed on the formulation I still use today (6 years later), which is a mix of jojoba, olive, and hazelnut oil, along with a blend of essential oils. I still try other products from time to time, but always come back to the oil cleansing method being the most enjoyable, and effective.

HOW TO OIL CLEANSE

To practice the oil cleansing method, you can use your choice of oil, or a blend of oils and essential oils. Using a small amount, maybe 3-6 drops, you massage the oils into your face. (It actually works quite well as a makeup remover, ladies!) Massage the oil into your face, repeat if needed, and simply wipe clean with a dry washcloth or cloth pad. You can opt to use a warm washcloth, but I actually prefer the dry method, because I find it gentler before bed, when I like to cleanse.
