Unfortunately, the FDA has a lot of room for improvement when it comes to regulating harmful ingredients in personal-care products. Because of this, it’s imperative that we educate ourselves as consumers and think before we buy.

5 Harmful Ingredients to Avoid
1. Parabens
One of the most common harmful ingredients in skincare: Parabens. Parabens are preservatives used to prevent the growth of bacteria, yeast, and mold. While this may make them seem more helpful than harmful, parabens contain chemicals that have been linked to breast cancer and can affect reproductive functions.
2. Synthetic Colors
Unlike parabens, synthetic colors can be difficult to spot on a product label. Keep an eye out for FD&C or D&C in ingredients lists. These are often the FDA code for synthetic colors. Most of these products are human carcinogens which can irritate the skin and are linked to ADHD in children.
3. Fragrance
Another harmful ingredient in skincare that may take you by surprise… Fragrance. Many companies use the term ‘fragrance’ to disguise a whole slew of unsafe ingredients in their products. Many synthetic fragrances are chemicals that irritate the skin, cause allergies, and may result in reproductive issues.
4. Formaldehyde
Not only is important to watch out for formaldehyde, you should also keep an eye out for products that release formaldehyde such as DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, polyoxymethylene urea, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, bromopol and glyoxal. Formaldehyde is used to prevent bacteria growth in cosmetic products, but it is a human carcinogen that can lead to cancer and skin irritation.
5. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)
These ingredients are commonly found in foaming personal care products, like face wash. When combined with other chemicals, SLS and SLES can form a human carcinogen that may lead to skin irritation, allergic reactions, and kidney and respiratory issues.
These are just some of the dangerous ingredients commonly found in FDA-approved body products. We encourage you to do your own research to learn more about other chemicals and toxins found in cosmetics before picking out new products. Instead of trusting a company when they claim to be natural or organic, put in a little extra effort by reading ingredients lists. This will ensure you use products that meet your standards!
