The Two Healing Ingredients In Every OWL Broth Recipe

If you think you know what to expect before taking your first sip of OWL broth, think again. OWL Broth Elixirs are different from traditional stock for a number of reasons.

First off, we simmer longer! Most stocks are simmered for 6 hours and OWL broths are simmered for at least 24. Secondly, OWL broth uses all organic ingredients that are extra flavorful and nutritious. Finally—and perhaps most importantly—OWL Broth Elixirs don’t contain typical broth ingredients like onion and garlic.

Why? Because OWL makes products that are designed to heal the gut!

While it’s true that onion and garlic may aid in digestion for some, these two ingredients are high in FODMAPs, which means they can cause inflammation in people who are sensitive to them. Before we dive into how we’ve remedied this issue in our broths, let’s take a closer look at inflammation.

What is inflammation?

Simply put, inflammation is the way our bodies respond to perceived harm. Stress, toxins, and infection are all factors that can contribute to inflammation.

What does inflammation do?

Inflammation occurs in order to protect our bodies from these perceived harms, which means that inflammation is actually a good thing… until it persists longer than it should.

What happens when inflammation doesn’t go away?

Chronic inflammation can lead to a whole slew of issues including autoimmune disease, arthritis, heart disease, interrupted sleep, and poor gut health.

How does inflammation impact the gut?

The health of our gut can impact our entire body. So when there is inflammation in the gut, we’re affected from head to toe. Because many of the body’s immune cells are located in the gut, inflammation can make us more susceptible to illness. But not just that, weakened immunity in the gut can actually cause our cells to attack the digestive tract, which leads to issues like IBD, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease.

✨ The Ingredients You WON’T Find in Our Broth Recipes

Now, let’s get back to garlic, onion, and FODMAPS. Scientifically speaking, FODMAPs are a type of sugars that aren’t completely digested or absorbed. After passing slowly through the small intestine, these sugars ferment into gut bacteria and produce gas when they reach the large intestine. This happens in ALL bodies, not just those with digestive problems. But for those who do have IBS or other gut health issues, it can result in extreme bloating and discomfort.

Common high FODMAP foods:
Cow’s Milk
Cruciferous veggies
… the list goes on.

✨ The Ingredients You WILL Find In Our Broth Recipes

When OWL’s founder, Lindsey Wilson, resolved to heal her digestive issues, cutting out FODMAPs was one of the first steps she took. She knew that cutting back on inflammatory foods was an absolute necessity in order for her body to heal. During this same time, she began learning all about the benefits of bone broth for gut health, and she decided to integrate broth into her daily diet.

Unfortunately, she was unable to find a bone broth that followed her low FODMAP diet because most broths on the market contain onion and garlic. As a result, she started experimenting with new recipes at home that were void of these common allergens. Instead, she simmered her broths with anti-inflammatory ingredients that are known for their flavor and healing qualities.

The result? A truly one-of-a-kind broth designed to aid in digestion and heal the gut lining.

While OWL Broth Elixirs contain a wide range of medicinal herbs and organic veggies, two of the key ingredients are ginger and turmeric. Here’s the scoop on these miracle healers…

Ginger has been recognized as a powerful digestive aid for thousands of years. It’s widely accepted in both Eastern and Western medicine as its effects on gut health have been proven.

Ginger’s Digestive Benefits:

  • Prevents and eliminates gas
  • Relaxes the smooth muscle of the intestines
  • Stimulates the production of saliva, bile, and digestive enzymes
  • Speeds the movement of food from the stomach to the small intestine

Ginger was specifically chosen for OWL’s Broth Elixirs because of these powerful benefits, and it also has a distinct flavor that makes our recipes especially delicious. Ginger is zesty, warming, and pungent, giving our broths a special comforting quality when sipped straight from a mug.

Turmeric is widely known to be an effective pain reliever and healing agent. This is thanks to curcumin, an anti-inflammatory compound that gives turmeric its vibrant orange hue. Curcumin is available in multiple forms including capsules, teas, powder extracts, and more.

Turmeric’s Digestive Benefits:

  • Neutralizes free radicals
  • Decreases the symptoms of IBS
  • Relieves digestive inflammation
  • Prevents cell damage

Along with its anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric also has a delicious flavor that perfectly complements the herbal nature of OWL broths. Turmeric has an earthy flavor that’s slightly sweet. It’s similar to ginger, but less pungant.

Once you know about these special ingredients in OWL broths, it’s hard not to notice the difference. Each sip is a reassurance that your body is being cared for in the best way possible. Our mug-a-day ritual is sure to improve your gut health, making your entire being function more effectively.

Thank you for investing in your health and understanding that not all broths are created equal! We appreciate you.
